All-Edge Sicilian-Style Pizza
Laughing Squid 27 Jan 2012, 11:28 pm CET
By simply using one of those all-edge brownie pans, Adam Kuban at Slice, the pizza-centric blog at Serious Eats, has created a mighty fine all-edge sicilian-style pizza. Abbondanza!
You’ve seen the all-edge brownie pan, right? The first time I saw it, one thought popped into my twisted mind: “F*** brownies. Hello, pizza!”* After all, on a square pizza, be it Sicilian or grandma or Detroit-style, the corner is king followed closely by the edge…The center is for jokers…

Look at Life, Vintage Newsreel Visits Bohemian Coffee Bars of London
Laughing Squid 27 Jan 2012, 10:04 pm CET
Special Features Division of the Rank Organisation produced the ongoing newsreel series called Look at Life starting in the late 1950s which depicted scenes from (mostly) British life. Over a span of 10 years, they created over 500 episodes which served as cinema newsreels. This particular Look at Life film, circa 1959, visits the hip bohemian coffee bar scene in London’s SOHO district.
Swedish site, Nostalgoteket, describes a bit of what is shown in the film:
Very cool scene in the 2Is with a rock & roll band playing wildly and the crowd jiving away! A square invades a hipster coffee bar and all the cats give him the evil eye. “The French” is the most bohemian coffee house of the lot—with beatniks discussing planetary movements. Some of the coffee bars shown include: The 2Is, the French, the Macabre, Le Grande, Stockpot, Sam Widges, Melbray, Universal, La Roca, Freight Train, El Toro, Picasso, Las Vegas, Moka Bar, and more.

UX, The Covert Cultural Preservation Collective of Paris
Laughing Squid 27 Jan 2012, 10:00 pm CET
“The New French Hacker-Artist Underground” by Jon Lackman is a fascinating Wired article about the French UX collective, a shadowy group that uses covert actions to preserve neglected historical and cultural treasures in Paris. Over the past 30 years, the group has infiltrated art museums to demonstrate security flaws, and says it has completed 15 covert restorations, including the 2006 repair of the Pantheon clock:
A cadre spent months infiltrating the Pantheon, the grand structure in Paris that houses the remains of France’s most cherished citizens. Eight restorers built their own secret workshop in a storeroom, which they wired for electricity and Internet access and outfitted with armchairs, tools, a fridge, and a hot plate. During the course of a year, they painstakingly restored the Pantheon’s 19th- century clock, which had not chimed since the 1960s.

Fat Tony Vinyl Figure by Ron English Satirizes Kellogg’s Tony the Tiger
Laughing Squid 27 Jan 2012, 9:20 pm CET
Ron English has created a Fat Tony vinyl toy figure that satirizes Kellogg’s iconic mascot, Tony the Tiger of Frosted Flakes cereal. You may remember recently when a series of English’s parody cereal boxes were placed on a shelf at a grocery store in California. One of those boxes was labelled “Sugar Frosted Fat” from “Killikids” and featured an image of Fat Tony. According to Clutter, this toy will soon be available in very limited quantities at your local toy store.

popuphood, Small Business Revitalization Project in Oakland, California
Laughing Squid 27 Jan 2012, 8:44 pm CET
Sarah Filley and Alfonso Dominguez cofounded popuphood, a new urban small business revitalization project in Oakland, California that offered retail stores six months of free rent to occupy vacant storefronts in the historic Old Oakland neighborhood. The hope, of course, is that the chosen small businesses will be able to secure long term leases after the trial period. The project has been quite successful thus far and is serving as an example for other cities. Filmmaker Eva Kolenko created Popuphood, a short film that gives an up close look on the project.
POPUPHOOD retailers include: Manifesto Bicycles, Marion and Rose’s Workshop, Sticks + Stones, Piper + John General Goods, Turtle and Hare, and Crown Nine.

Amazing Ewok-Like Treehouse Village Includes 1800 Sq. Foot Treehome
Laughing Squid 27 Jan 2012, 8:22 pm CET
Former Green Beret medic, Michael Garnier of Out ‘n’ About Treehouse Treesort, has built an amazing Ewok-like village of treehouses on his property in rural Oregon which he partially operates as a bed-and-breakfast “treesort”. He also has become an industry leader in treehouse construction and has helped develop the Garnier Limb, which is a better way to build structures on trees. Recently, Fair Companies got a tour of the property and created an interesting short film about his unique structures and the story behind them. They later followed him to his personal treehouse home and got the scoop on what may be the world’s largest treehouse. The home is 1800 square feet and is supported by 7 trees.
